AEROGEL: Aerogel-based magnetic nanocomposites for water decontamination

feature-image

AEROGEL Aerogel-based magnetic nanocomposites for water decontamination is funded under the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitization. Contamination of waters with industrial pollutants and microbes is a serious hazard to human health and aquatic life, requiring advanced remediation methods. Fine-tuned nanomaterials have recently been reported as promising adsorbents for toxic compounds in water. An emerging strategy for obtaining nanostructures with controlled properties is the use of microfluidic devices as synthesis platforms. Microfluidics provides precise control over synthesis parameters, generating nanosystems with a narrow size distribution, homogeneous shape, and reproducible composition, structure, and physicochemical properties. However, the synthesis of aerogel by microfluidic methods is still in its infancy, with no aerogel-based composites for water decontamination reported so far. Therefore, AEROGEL aims to fill this research gap and synthesize an aerogel-based magnetic composite system on a chip for water decontamination.
