Entry and stay conditions in Romania

Citizens of the European Union, the European Economic Area (EEA) and the Swiss Confederation Member State can enter Romania at any border checkpoint where they must present a valid identity document – passport or another identity document acknowledged by the Romanian State.

EU/EEA/Swiss Confederation citizens may enter and stay in the territory of Romania in keeping with the right of free movement and residence granted under the Romanian legislation, according to European provisions. For a stay in Romania longer than 90 days, a registration certificate has to be obtained from the Romanian Immigration Office.

Citizens of other states (states not in the EU/EEA) need an entry visa.

Customs Regulations

Goods that are to be marketed are subject to the customs regime. For personal goods no customs duties are levied. For further details visit the websites of the National Customs Authority and the Border Police.

Internal Transport

In Romania driving is done on the right side of the road.

Speed limits on Romanian roads are as follows: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads, 100 km/h on European national roads (E) and 130 km/h on motorways.

In Romania you give priority to traffic coming from your right, if not stated otherwise by other traffic signs.

Wearing seat belts is mandatory.

Parking is permitted in special parking areas and on public roads (unless there are signs prohibiting parking).

In case of road accidents, irrespective of how serious, until traffic agents arrive, it is not permitted to alter the position of the vehicle or move it away from the where the accident happened.

Health Insurance

Health and travel insurances are accepted in medical establishments in Romania, provided payment is confirmed first by the foreign insurance company.

Local Currency

Local currency is Lei (lion in English). Exchange rates are: 1 Eur = 4.5 Romanian Lei, 1$ = 4.3 Romanian Lei, 1£ = 5.3 Lei (reference for November 2016).

Credit Cards

In Romania all types of credit cards valid in the European Union are accepted. Credit cards may be used at retailers or service providers where signs indicate the cards accepted, and at any ATM. ATMs dispense Lei (RON), the national currency.

Transportation

Airport - Henri Coanda International Airport (OTP)

International flights arrive at Henri Coanda International Airport (Otopeni), the biggest airport in Romania, located about 19 Km (12 Miles) north of Bucharest's downtown. Facilities include ATMs, an exchange office and cell phone rentals. Major car rental companies have offices located on the baggage claim level.

Transportation between Henri Coanda International Airport and city centre

By Bus: Express Bus 783 offers daily service to the city centre, with stops at Baneasa Airport, Piata Presei Libere, Piata Victoriei, Piata Romana, Piata Universitatii and Piata Unirii. This line runs day and night. The bus leaves every 15 minutes during the day and every 40 minutes during the night. The journey to downtown takes approximately 40 minutes. Fare is 7 Lei (about 1.8 Euro) for a round-trip ticket.

By Taxi: Only licensed taxi companies are allowed in the airport. Fare to downtown Bucharest is about 15 Euro. The fee per km for trips from the airport is starting from 1.4 Lei to 3.30 Lei (0.3 to 0.9 Euro/km).

By Train: "Henri Coandă Express" trains provide connection between Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport and Bucharest North Railway Station. The passengers transfer between CFR "Airport Stop" and the airport passengers terminals is provided by buses whose schedule is synchronized with the trains schedule. The tickets are valid both for the train and for the transfer bus, the price being of 6.8 lei (1.5 Euro) per ticket.

Public Transportation

Bucharest's public transportation network includes: bus (autobuz), tram (tramvai), trolleybus (troilebuz) and subway (Metrou).

Buses, trams and trolley buses operate - between 5:00am and 11:59pm. See more information on RATB.

RATB and Subway maps can be found at kiosks near bus and tram stops. Tickets must be purchased beforehand and validated upon boarding. Travelers may be asked to show the validated ticket during the trip. Travelers without a validated ticket must pay a 50 Lei (13 Euro) penalty (Suprataxa).

Taxi service:

In the city centre, taxis are easy to take from the street but we strongly recommend you use hotel taxis or to call a taxi by phone through the radio taxi service. Fees per km are posted on driver's and passenger doors.

Average Taxi fares: Initial Fee 2 Lei (0.5 Euro) plus 2 Lei/km (0.45 Euro/km).
